Frequently asked questions
Everything to know about staying at Lumina House — two modern apartments in a Salem, Massachusetts duplex, less than a mile from downtown.
The units
How many guests does Lumina House sleep?
Lumina House is two private apartments in one Salem duplex. The Upper Unit has 3 bedrooms and 1.5 baths and sleeps up to 8. The First-Floor Unit has 2 bedrooms (each with a queen bed) and 1 bath and sleeps up to 5.
Can we book both units for a larger group?
Yes. The two units are in the same duplex, so groups of up to 13 guests (8 upstairs, 5 on the first floor) can book both. Each has its own private entrance, full kitchen and bathrooms. Choose “Both units” on the inquiry form.
Is there a unit without stairs?
Yes. The First-Floor Unit is a single-level home with no stairs. The Upper Unit spans the top two levels of the duplex and includes stairs.
What’s in the kitchens, and is there laundry?
Both units have a fully equipped kitchen with stainless steel appliances — refrigerator, stove, oven, microwave, dishwasher, coffee maker, kettle, toaster and cooking basics — plus an in-unit washer and dryer. The Upper Unit’s dining table seats six; the First-Floor Unit’s seats four.
Can I work remotely or stay for a month?
Yes. Each unit has wifi and a dedicated workspace (the First-Floor Unit also has an ethernet connection), and long-term stays of 28+ nights are welcome and save 20% (stays of 7+ nights save 10%). For a month-long stay, send an inquiry with your dates.
Is there anything for babies or young kids?
Both units have a crib; the Upper Unit also has a pack ’n play.

Brisk walkers — and our guests — put the wharf and downtown at about 15–20 minutes. See the local guide for more.
Do I need a car in Salem?
Many guests don’t: everything downtown is walkable, and one guest wrote “we appreciated not having a car!” For Boston, the MBTA Commuter Rail runs from Salem station to North Station in about 30 minutes, and the seasonal Salem Ferry reaches Long Wharf in about 50 minutes (late May through October 31 in 2026). October & Halloween in Salem
Is Lumina House a good base for Haunted Happenings and Halloween?
It’s an easy walk into the action: the Salem Witch Museum is ~1.2 mi (~25 min) and the Essex Street pedestrian mall ~0.9 mi (~20 min). The City advises visitors not to drive into downtown in October, and free street parking near the duplex is first-come, first-served and usually busier on October weekends — so once you’ve parked, leave the car and walk.
How early should I book for October?
As early as you can. October is Salem’s busiest month and fills up fast, especially weekends and the days around Halloween. Popular museums, walking tours and restaurants should be reserved ahead too. October tips →
